Sustainable House Day Expo This Saturday 17 September

Only three more sleeps until the Northern Rivers Sustainable House Day Expo & Tiny Homes Design Showcase in Mullumbimby.

We are thrilled to tell you that we have received over 40 entries to the Sustainable House Day "Tiny Homes" design competition. All entries have been judged and we have the winners in a secret envelope waiting to be opened and announced this Saturday at the Expo. Also on display on the day are over 20 sustainable living trade and food stalls.

A new and exciting addition to the Expo this year is the "Speed Date a Designer" sessions. A great opportunity for you to seek advice on your building or retrofitting ideas with designers throughout the day. Click here to see which designers are up for dating on the day.

We have a jam packed program with brilliant speakers, cooking demonstrations and opportunities to win great prizes. Make a day of it, come and enjoy the creativity and innovation of our great region and then pop into the Mullumbimby markets afterwards.

Second Hand Saturday - 24 September

Second Hand Saturday is approaching again and this year it’s on Saturday 24 September – get involved!

About: For those who aren’t familiar with it, Second Hand Saturday is the largest single day of garage sales on the North Coast. Householders are encouraged to register and hold a garage sale at home, coordinate a joint garage sale in their street, or with their local school, preschool, community organisation or church.  Registration is free and Council does the promotion and garage sale listings online and in the local newspapers.

Why get involved: Second Hand Saturday helps to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill, enables residents to participate in the promotion of reuse and repair, and engages them in an environmentally, socially and economically rewarding activity.

To register

There were about 120 SHS garage sales in the Byron Shire last would be great to have a few more in 2016 – please encourage family and friends to register!

Alison says: "One of the easiest and most pleasurable ways we can contribute to a sustainable future and more importantly a more abundant and enjoyable one is to practise some sustainability principles in the kitchen at home.

Have you heard about "Street Libraries"?

Love books? You'll be thrilled with the boom in street libraries in the across Australia. Built by locals and often installed in parks or front yards, street libraries are open to everyone. Street libraries are little weather proof houses for books planted in peoples’ front yards, parks, streets, libraries, child care centres etc where anyone can ‘take a book or leave a book’. They encourage neighbours to connect and share books, activate streets, support the sharing and re-use economy Books are free to borrow and you're encouraged to add books to your local street library.
