Temporary road closures:

Council is supporting this year’s event with a $29,000 funding contribution.

New Year’s Eve celebrations for 2011 will continue to be a relaxed, family friendly, alcohol-free event, with the focus of the festivities being at the beach front.

This year will see a change in the evening’s activities with entertainment provided for the public from 7pm until midnight. The line-up will begin with a performance by the Arakwal dancers followed with ambient music by local musicians and a laser light show. New Year’s Eve regulars, the Samba Blistas will be performing again, followed by a local band who will play up to the New Year’s count down. There will be a fireworks display to welcome the arrival of 2012.

The twilight markets will feature stalls providing food, craft and artisan products plus local home made and home grown items. Amusement rides will be providing fun and excitement for the kids.

To ensure the safe management on the night there are street closures. Jonson Street will be closed at the Lawson Street roundabout up to Main Beach. Bay Street will be closed at the corner of Fletcher Street. Bay Lane will be restricted to residents and delivery vehicles only between Fletcher and Jonson Streets. Closures will commence at 6am on Saturday 31 December. The streets will be reopened at 6am on Sunday 1 January after the clean up operation.  The road closures will mean that no parking is available at the beachfront during the day while preparations are underway.

The streets and parks of Byron Bay will have an alcohol prohibition for the 24 hour period to ensure a safe and community friendly atmosphere.
