Tourism Advisory Committee members sought

Nominations for Byron Shire Council’s newly established Tourism Advisory Committee (TAC) close on Friday, 30 November.

Deputy Mayor Basil Cameron said Council is seeking seven (7) external committee members who have an interest in tourism and an understanding of the current and future needs of the Shire regarding the management of tourism.

He said with the recent adoption of the Tourism Management Plan (TMP) will provide a framework for Council, community and tourism to work together to maximise the benefits of tourism.

“Tourism provides many benefits such as jobs and economic development, however managing high visitor numbers is often a major challenge for Council because of the pressure on infrastructure, community amenity and the environment.

“We need to find creative solutions to how we manage these impacts but still maintain a sustainable tourism industry that reflects the values and character of our Shire.”

The suitably qualified external representatives will include f our (4) tourism industry members:

  • One associated with the tourism industry in ByronBay
  • One associated with the tourism industry in Brunswick Heads
  • One associated with rural tourism and
  • One associated with a small, family type tourism operation.

The remaining three (3) will include community members who are not associated with the tourism industry and of whom at least one is from a rural area.

It is highly desirable that committee members have expertise in areas such as marketing, business development, tourism business operation, experience with relevant community or regional organisations and an understanding of the current and future needs of the shire regarding the management of tourism.

The committee constitution and full selection criteria for the Committee are available at community access points and on Council’s website at www.byron.nsw.gov.au/expressions-of-interest .

Councillors Basil Cameron and Simon Richardson are the councillor representatives on the Tourism Advisory Committee.
