Community Focus Group meets on draft LEP and DCP
Byron Shire Council has established a Community Focus Group to assist with the design of a community consultation program for the public exhibition of the upcoming draft Shire-wide Local Environmental Plan (LEP) and Development Control Plan (DCP).
The group met for the first time in September and consists of representatives from 12 community groups across Byron Shire.
Byron Shire Council’s director of planning Ray Darney said the Community Focus Group’s purpose is to prepare a draft consultation strategy for the exhibition of the draft LEP and DCP which:
- informs the community about the details of the draft LEP and DCP
- arranges for dialogue with the community about these documents and
- records responses and feedback from the community about the documents and, where appropriate, incorporates feedback for the redrafting of the LEP and DCP.
According to Mr Darney, the draft LEP and DCP are major planning documents that will guide how development will occur in Byron Shire for the next 10 to 15 years.
“The draft LEP is the legislative framework for planning and the DCP sets out in detail land use controls and other planning issues such as land use zonings.
“The draft documents present considerable changes to zoning and some land use throughout the Shire,” Mr Darney said.
The Community Focus Group will be working with a facilitator once a week for 6 weeks to prepare the draft community consultation strategy. The group hopes the strategy will provide the community with maximum opportunities to have their say about the important draft planning documents.
The chosen members represent a range of community interest groups throughout Byron Shire and include representatives from:
