Council and BYS enter new partnership arrangement

Byron Shire Council will be handing over the “YAC keys” to Byron Youth Service at 2pm this Friday at the Byron Youth Activity Centre (YAC).

Council resolved in June to issue Byron Youth Service a sub-license to manage the YAC.  The sub-license includes management of the auditorium.

“Young people across the Shire will benefit from the new partnership arrangement between Council and Byron Youth Service,” Mayor Barham said.

“Both organisations are committed to the youth of our area and the partnership will deliver diverse and engaging programs.

“This is a positive step forward for the youth of our Shire, the community, BYS and Council,” she said.

Byron Shire Council will continue to run and support a range of activities from the YAC auditorium including the new youth program recently developed in partnership with arts organisations from throughout the NorthCoast.

“With BYS now managing the building, our youth activities officer will have greater flexibility in delivering programs across the entire Shire,” Council’s community development and projects officer Robyn Masters said.

“Transport is a crucial issue for our youth and it can be hard to find transport into Byron to attend courses and events.

“We are now focusing on delivering youth programs throughout the entire Shire which will make it easier for young people to attend and become involved.

“Our newly developed calendar of youth events will remain on Council’s website until such time BYS has their own calendar and booking system in place,” she said

Existing bookings for the auditorium can be viewed at www.byron.nsw.gov.au/yac

“BYS has also indicated they are planning to take a stronger role in delivering activities after hours and on weekends which is a great bonus for the Shire’s youth,” Ms Masters said.

A memorandum of understanding is currently being developed between Council and Byron Youth Service for the 12 month sub-license to maximise opportunities and available activities for young people.
