Annual kerbside clean up commences

Byron Shire Council’s annual bulky items kerbside clean up commences next week.

Council’s waste and recycling services manager Russell Chaplin said is asking residents in ByronBay, SuffolkPark, Baywood Chase, ByronHills and Broken Head to put out their bulky items kerbside from Monday 8 June.

“This is householders’ chance to get rid of unwanted bulky items in the yearly free kerbside cleanup.

“The service is only available to households who receive a weekly Council household waste service.

“Each household is limited to 2 cubic metres of waste,” Mr Chaplin said.

To assist with the collection, Council is asking residents to separate the items into two neat piles; one for bulky waste items and the other for metal items.

“Two trucks  will be collecting  the different types of waste. One truck is for waste and the other for metals,” Mr Chaplin said.

“We are urging all residents to keep bulky metal items in separate piles in order to assist with recycling,” he said.

The kerbside clean up program will be conducted in three stages over three weeks, with the Area 1 collection starting on Monday 15June.

Area 1 includes residents in ByronBay, SuffolkPark, Baywood Chase, ByronHills and Broken Head.  Residents in these areas must have their waste out by 14June to ensure it will be collected.

Collection staff will work through these areas and should have all material in this zone collected by 19 June.

Area 2 includes residents in OceanShores (North & South), SouthGoldenBeach, New Brighton, Brunswick Heads.  Residents in these areas must have their waste at the kerb by 21 June.  The collection in these areas should be completed by 26 June.

Area 3 includes residents in Bangalow, Mullumbimby, Andersons Hill, Ewingsdale, and SunriseBeach. Residents in these areas must have their waste at the kerb by 21 June.  The collection in these areas should be completed by 3 July.

“Residents are asked to ensure their waste is placed at the kerb before the collection in their area starts,” Mr Chaplin said.

“Council can not return to collect waste material that is put out after the collection starts,” he said.

There are four easy steps to follow for the kerbside clean up collection:

Get the timing right

Note when the collection starts in your area. Don’t wait until the collection starts to put your waste at the kerb - you will miss out if the trucks have already been through your area.

Get the volume right

Only two cubic metres of materials will be accepted from each property in total (2m x 1m x 1m – approximately one small box trailer load). That keeps the service fair and affordable.

Check out what can be collected

The collection is for bulky goods only, not for smaller items that will fit in your wheelie bin. Rules apply to exclude hazardous items and items that are difficult to collect.

Make 2 piles

Separate the general waste, and metals/whitegoods into two different piles. Please make sure the piles are neat and can be easily handled by 2 people.

The following materials will not be collected in the kerbside collection:

·          Building and renovation materials

·          Liquids of paints

·          Tree pruning and garden waste

·          Batteries or gas bottles

·          Commercial or industrial waste

·          Food scraps and packaging.

This service is not for green waste collection from the recent storms. Residents were advised to place their green waste from storms, kerbside by 1 June.  Council teams are currently collecting the green waste and in many areas the service has been completed.

“The opportunity to place storm damage green waste out for collection has passed.  Council asks residents not to put out any additional green waste as it can not be collected” Mr Chaplin said.
