Community and family the focus for Byron Bay NYE

Families and Byron Shire residents are invited to ‘Soul Street’, a low-key community celebration in Byron Bay this New Year’s Eve.

Byron Shire Council’s General Manager, Ken Gainger, said the night was designed for people of all ages – children, parents and grandparents.

“New Year’s Eve activities in Byron Bay will be held in Jonson Street which will be an alcohol free zone,” Mr Gainger said.

“The focus is on fantastic family-friendly entertainment and great food so if you want to drink and party then Byron Bay is not the place for you on New Year’s Eve,” he said.

Jonson Street will be closed to traffic and will be a pedestrian zone featuring live music, circus acts, cabaret, comedy and fabulous food.

“We are hoping that people from around the Byron Shire will take the opportunity to come to Byron Bay to mark the end of 2017 and the start of 2018 and to celebrate the wonderful sense of community that our Shire is so famous for,” Mr Gainger said.

“There will be no events on the beachfront, which, like most parts of Byron Bay, will be an alcohol free zone and there will not be any fireworks at midnight,” Mr Gainger said.

“New Year’s Eve in Byron Bay is for anyone interested in a low-key approach to New Year’s Eve,” Mr Gainger said.

If you are up bright and early on 1 January there is the First Sun event at 5:15am at the Cape Byron Lighthouse which is a celebration of the start of 2018 with meditation and yoga.
