Finally…Byron Shire Council welcomes Commonwealth Disaster Assistance for flood victims

Byron Shire Mayor, Simon Richardson, has welcomed the Federal Government’s announcement offering disaster assistance to residents affected by Ex-Cyclone Debbie.

“The floods caused by Ex-Cyclone Debbie in March had a devastating impact on some sections of the community and we have been lobbying the Federal Government to demonstrate the need for the funding,” Mayor Richardson said.

“Many businesses and homes in the Shire were inundated with water and whilst it has been four months since the floods I know this offer of assistance will be gratefully received,” he said.

“It has been a difficult time for many of our residents with the floods affecting some of the most vulnerable in our community,” Mayor Richardson said.

“Council staff have worked incredibly hard putting together a case for Commonwealth disaster assistance,” he said.

“They put forward a compelling case documenting the impact of the floods on residents and businesses and this is an example of what can be achieved for communities when there is collaboration across political parties,” Mayor Richardson said.

“I would like to thank the Parliamentary Secretary for the North Coast, Ben Franklin, the Member for Ballina, Tamara Smith, and Justine Elliott, the Member for Richmond, for the work they did on this matter.

“Thanks also to the community for their patience whilst we worked through the channels of bureaucracy,’ Mayor Richardson said.

Eligible residents of the Byron Shire now have access to the Disaster Recovery Payment and the Disaster Recovery Allowance which provides for a one-off payment or short-term income support.

“I encourage all Byron Shire residents who were affected by the floods to check to see if they qualify for Commonwealth disaster assistance,” Mayor Richardson said.
