Aboriginal funding opportunities

Australian Sports Commission
up to $4,000

Provides financial assistance to talented Indigenous sports people including coaches, managers, trainers and officials. Funding is available for travel and accommodation expenses for national and international events.

Department Education, Employment & Workplace Relations
maximum $110,000

Many Indigenous community organisations are keen to get Indigenous businesses up and running, providing goods and services and employing Indigenous people in lasting jobs. The ISBF can assist in fostering the development of businesses owned and run by Indigenous community organisations, and through these businesses, to promote lasting Indigenous employment opportunities.

State Trustees
maximum $5,000

The purpose of the fund is to apply resources towards the welfare of Aboriginal children under the age of eighteen years. Any projects or program not taken up by Government authorities that will enhance the well-being of Aboriginal children will be considered. Because of the large number of projects already supported this year the fund will not be taking any grant applications until further notice.

The NICP is an Australian government initiative that improves the professional employment prospects of Indigenous Australians. It links Indigenous tertiary students with employers in a cadetship arrangement involving full-time study and work placements, and aims to generate more employment opportunities for Indigenous Australians.

Heritage Office (NSW)

Provides funding for NSW Aboriginal organisations and communities to undertake or partner in projects to identify, conserve and promote Aboriginal heritage in NSW. There are currently four grants available in 2009, with an additional four becoming available towards the end of 2010. Applications can be made at any time throughout the year for some of the grants, others have specific opening and closing dates.

The Australian Government through DEEWR, provides a wide range of employment and business assistance for Indigenous Australians. Categories include Youth, Students, Job Seekers, Indigenous Australians starting their own business and Employers looking for Indigenous employees.

Wage Assistance is a payment given to Australian employers as an incentive to employ Indigenous Australians on an on-going basis. Wage Assistance is used mainly by small private sector businesses and is available for apprentices and trainees as well as other employees. It is also available to public and community sector employers.
