Compulsory Notification of Food Businesses on Statewide Database
From February 2002 it became law for all food businesses in NSW to notify the NSW Food Authority with certain information about them and their business. This information is stored on a statewide database. Notification can be completed on-line free of charge by accessing [www.foodnotify.nsw.gov.au], or alternatively a form can be filled out and lodged with Council. A fee of $55.00 will apply for Council to make the notification.
Notification applies to all food businesses including event stalls, petrol stations, video stores, corner shops, food transport operations and even premises with drink and confectionery vending machines. Regular market stalls (but not charitable fund raising stalls such as street stalls and fete stalls) must also notify. Event organisers will be responsible for notifying all stalls not registered on the database in their own right.
All food businesses should quote the NAFSIS register number when directing correspondence or applications to council.
Policy, information and links are provided are available from the Food page. Items relevant to the food industry include food safety plan information, links to Food Standards Codes and the “North Coast Regional Code: Sale of Food at Markets & Temporary Events”.
Council advises any food business to be familiar with the New South Wales Food Act 2003.
