Filming in Byron

Film making and film going is celebrated in the Northern Rivers region which boasts the third highest numbers of film professionals in Australia, after Sydney and Melbourne.  In other words, the region is home the highest non-metropolitan concentration of film professionals in the country, many of whom live in Byron Shire.

  • In its very short life, the Byron Bay International Film Festival has morphed from an Australian to a truly international film festival.  The festival attracts films and filmmakers from around the world boasting dozens of Australian and world premieres.  Supported by a wide range of sponsors, the festival is an initiative of the Byron Community and Cultural Centre and local filmmakers.
  • Flickerfest International Short Film Festival is Australia’s only Academy Accredited Short Film Festival screening the best of new and cutting edge short films from Australia and the world.  The iQ Arts & Eco Centre has hosted the festival locally for over 10 years.  The festival is screened in the historic A&I Hall in Bangalow.
  • SAE Institute is the world's largest and most prominent audio engineering, animation and film institute.  Established in Australia more than 30 years ago, SAE now boasts 48 campuses across 21 countries.  SAE's world headquarters are in Byron Bay.
  • Many of our residents have produced and participated in all forms of productions. Recently, Byron was at the heart of a regional production of the ABC-drama, East of Everything.  The series was conceived and filmed here with the bulk of the cast and crew being residents of the region.
  • Bangalow-based Northern Rivers Screenworksis the screen industry office for the region, driving a significant cluster of film, video and digital media industry professionals and emerging professionals. Below is an excerpt from Screenworks website:

Our office is located in Bangalow where we can be contacted for advice on locations, production liaison, industry contacts, crewing of productions, events, services and facilities throughout the region.
