Respite programs provide planned short-term and time-limited breaks for families and other unpaid care givers of children with a developmental delay and adults with an intellectual disability in order to support and maintain the primary care-giving relationship. Respite also provides a positive experience for the person with an intellectual disability.

Commonwealth Carer Respite Centre
The Far North Coast Commonwealth Carer Respite Centre has two offices, one in Alstonville and one in Grafton. The types of respite care available include in-home, day care, residential or centre based respite, emergency, on-off respite, holidays/time away, host family respite, vacation care and other support for carers.

Northcott Disability Services
Northcott Disability Services provide respite care for older carers and their child with a disability. The service addresses the specialized needs of individuals, and works closely with other service providers to deliver a well co-ordinated response.
They also provide a wide range of services to individuals with a physical disability and their families, including family support, post school options and community participation programs for school-leavers.
