Council is committed to ensuring a good range of quality services and facilities for young people. As part of this commitment, we employ a part time Youth Activities Coordinator and a part time Youth Activities Officer.
Council has worked in partnership with young people and the wider community to establish its own Youth Council and to develop and implement the Youth Strategy and Action Plan. This guides our ongoing work with young people in the Shire.
The Byron Shire Youth Council operates under the auspice of Byron Shire Council, and provides an important opportunity for young people to have input into Council decision making processes.
Byron Shire Youth Council was first established in 2010. The group aims to improve young people’s access to Council services and facilities, ensure access to youth-friendly information, raise community awareness about youth issues, advocate on behalf of young people, and provide leadership opportunities. The Youth Council meets on a monthly basis and is facilitated by Council’s Youth Activities Coordinator and supported by other Byron Shire Council Staff from the Society and Culture Division.
Council contributes to a wide range of activities for young people throughout the Shire. Regular workshops and activities are run year-round including school holidays. Each year Council coordinates Youth Week activities such as the Youth Art Competition and Exhibition, Youth Music events and RUKKUS, a local music and skate event.
All of these programs represent a significant contribution by Council to improving the lives of young people across our community.
In addition to direct services Council also provides two annual Grant Rounds and funds and/or provides support to local organisations and community groups such as Byron Youth Service, the Uncle Project, Street Cruise, Byron Community Campus and other youth programs.
