Compost awareness survey

Results of compost survey

Thank you to all the folk who completed the compost survey last year.  400 entries were received and the feedback gained is being used in Council’s Organics Education program.

25 lucky folk took home prizes ranging from compost bins and worm farms, to $50 farmers markets vouchers & movie passes. Ocean Shores Public School had the most school entries and won a hollow log parrot home for their school grounds.

Survey results indicate there was strong support for the following:
More information about composting and compost workshops/ demonstrations (54%), training for kids at schools (75%), a kerbside collection for garden waste (73%), subsidised or cheap compost bins (61%)

Large numbers of respondents indicated that:
They probably didn’t compost properly (56%), that they preferred to compost at home for free than pay for a service (72%), they felt composting was good for the environment (72%) and made good sense  (80%).

Some respondents felt that:
they didn’t know which type of compost bin to get (29%), they were interested in learning about composting from others (29%), it was a good idea having those who could compost visit other households to help them get started (43%).

Since July 2010 Council has conducted over 45 compost sessions at farmers markets across the shire and will have staged 3 full day compost workshops at the Mullumbimby Community Gardens which have all been booked out.
