Public Art Panel

A panel is a group consisting of Councillors and specialist key stakeholders, with a particular interest in or expertise in the subject of the panel, which will assist Council in decision making relating to a particular matter. Panels do not have any executive power or authority to implement actions and all recommendations from these panels are reported to Council via a staff report for decision.

Panels are usually appointed for a 4 year term in line with Council elections unless otherwise resolved by Council.


The purpose of the Public Art Panel is:

  1. Advise Council on Public Art trends and issues and manage expectations of the Byron Shire community.
  2. Assist Council in meeting the objectives of the Public Art Policy.
  3. Devise a strategic Public Art Statement, which sets out a proactive approach to public art in the Byron Shire.
  4. Assess public art donation and loan proposals against the Public Art Guidelines and Criteria and provide recommendations to Council.
  5. Provide advice, if required, pertaining to Public Art in private developments as per the Development Control Plan for Public Art and the Public Art Strategy.


Members are selected because they have a broad base of experience and/or expertise in one or more of the following areas of public art:

  • Public art curation and/or practice
  • Landscape architecture
  • Architecture
  • Urban planning/ design
  • Interior design
  • Placemaking activities
  • Public art sector development
  • Public art policy

2 Councillor Representatives:

Community Representatives:

  • with experience and/or expertise in the above listed areas
  • A representative from Arts Northern Rivers
  • A representative from Bundjalung of Byron Bay (Arakwal) Corporation
  • General Manager or staff delegate (non-voting)
