Australia Day

Byron Shire Council is calling for nominations for the 2015 Australia Day Local Citizen of the Year. It’s a wonderful opportunity for the Shire to consider community members who are contributing towards making a difference to the region. From sporting and cultural achievements to business leadership and community volunteering, Byron Shire is a region that leads by example.

We have a very active and engaged Shire and this is a good opportunity to acknowledge those residents who give countless hours supporting our communities that in turn, helps define our character.

Byron Shire Council is inviting nominations to publicly recognise outstanding citizens of the Shire. 

  • Citizen of the Year (no age limit)
  • Young Citizen of the Year (person aged up to 25 years as at 26/1/15)
  • Senior Sports Person (16 years and over)
  • Junior Sports Person (under 16 years)
  • Community Event of the Year
  • Volunteer of the Year
  • Environmental Volunteer Project of the Year

Persons may be nominated by individuals, community groups or organisations. Nominations close Friday 5 December 2014. For further information, contact Mila Jones on 02 6626 7000. Brunswick Heads

Breakfast in the Park (Rotary Club of Mullumbimby)
Time:              7.30am – 10.00am
Where:            Housie Tent, Banner Park, Brunswick Heads
Free bus travel from Mullumbimby Newsagent at 7.30am courtesy of Blanches Coaches and returning to Mullumbimby at 10.00am, Breakfast $4.00, free Australian flags, live music, singalong

Official Ceremony (Rotary Club of Mullumbimby)
Time:               11.00am – 1.00pm
Where:             Brunswick Heads Bowling Club
Australia Day Ambassador, Australia Day Address, Community Awards, Citizenship Ceremony

Byron Bay

Breakfast in the Park (Rotary Club of Byron Bay) and the Australia Day Paddle
Time:              7.30am – 2.00pm
Where:            Next to the Byron Bay Surf Club, Main Beach
(The Paddle starts at Wategos at 10am and ends at the Byron Bay Surf Club where the celebrations are being held).  Watch the paddlers come in, Light refreshments, free Australian flags, live entertainment

Celebration of the Survival of Indigenous Culture (The Sisters for Reconciliation)
Time:              11.00am – 2.30pm
Where:            Byron Bay Main Beach Park, Cavanbah/Byron Bay
Alcohol free event, music and dancing, kids activities

Suffolk Park

Fun Afternoon (Byron Rural Fire Brigade)
Time:              12 noon – 5.00pm
Where:            Gaggin Park, Alcorn Street, Suffolk Park
Free Sausage sizzle, celebration cake, drinks, free Australian flags, children’s entertainment, music

Ocean Shores

Aussie BBQ (Ocean Shores Community Association)
Time:              3.00pm – 5.00pm (finish time to be confirmed)
Where:            Ocean Shores Public School
To be confirmed: Free Sausage sizzle, ice pops, celebration cake, drinks, Australian flags, music, mullet throwing championship, singalong
