Upgrade of Lighting at Tom Kendall Oval, New Brighton
Last updated: 27 October 2009
Tom Kendall Oval New Brighton is the home ground of the Shores
United Junior Soccer Club. With origins of the club dating back to the
1970’s, the Soccer Club currently fields over 150 registered players
with junior teams ranging from under six to sixteen.
Training for the Shores United Junior Soccer Club is presently
occurring on the single unlit oval on weekdays from 3.30pm, until
darkness intervenes. The result is that a number of teams are reliant
on neighbouring Soccer Clubs such as Brunswick Heads and Mullumbimby
for use of their Council controlled home grounds for training and some
games.
After consideration of submissions received following the public
exhibition of the Northern Shire Sporting Fields Strategy, the 23
October 2008 Ordinary Meeting of Council adopted the following
resolution:
08-642 Resolved
That
Council expedite as a matter of urgency the provision of lighting, to
the appropriate Australian standard, to the Tom Kendall Oval at New
Brighton funded from the Northern Shires’ Sporting Fields loan funds.
Councils Director of Planning, Mr Ray Darney has now approved the
Review of Environmental Factors (REF) for the installation of the
lights at Tom Kendall Oval.
The order for supply and installation of the lighting has now been
placed. Due to prior commitments of the supplier, installation is due
to start early February 2010. Lighting will be installed and ready for
use by late February 2010 (weather permitting). A “lighting user
agreement” will now be drawn up with the Shores United Soccer Club to
ensure that all conditions of the REF and the Ecological Impact
Assessment are complied with.
