All beaches in Byron Shire are OPEN

Byron Beach Closure Lifted -

Beach closures at Byron Bay and surrounding beaches have ended at 12pm Thursday, 48 hours after the fatal shark attack on a man on Tuesday at Clarkes Beach.

At the request of Byron Shire Council, Lifeguards closed beaches in the vicinity of the attack and officers from the Department of Primary Industries (DPI) have been monitoring the waters off Byron Bay.

Northern Region Lifeguard Coordinator Scott McCartney thanked the public for adhering to the beach closure warnings and remaining clear of the water. He also thanked volunteers from the Ballina Jet Rescue boat who have been assisting with investigations.

"The Council acted quickly and proactively to close beaches in the area following the tragedy and our lifeguards have been on duty to assist in monitoring for any ongoing hazards in the area," said Scott McCartney.

Note: The surf patrol season will officially start on Saturday 20 September when lifesavers and many lifeguard services return to beaches across NSW.
