Local Aboriginal Land Councils have a degree of governance and interface with Local Councils, State and Federal Government bodies. There are two Aboriginal Land Council boundaries that share the Byron Shire, being the Tweed Byron Local Aboriginal Land Council situated in Chinderah and Jali Local Aboriginal Land Council situated in Ballina. Both Land Councils have a right to be informed in the planning, protection and preservation of cultural sites and areas under the NSW Aboriginal Land Rights Act.
