Local Government Week runs from 28 July to 3 August 2008. The Week provides a focus for Byron Shire Council to promote the importance of Local Government in the community.
The 2008 theme, ‘Over the Fence: Cultivating our own Backyard’ relates to developing relationships with our neighbours and embracing differences by sharing and communicating across all age groups and nationalities. It also relates to the character of our towns and villages and what sets them apart.
As the third tier of Government, local councils often are seen as the providers of basic services only, but in truth are often the lynchpin in working with the community to provide leisure parks and environmental activities, cultural projects and special events, Australia Day ceremonies and community education.
Come along and visit the visual display set up in Council’s administration building to find out how Council is working with local residents to nurture ‘our backyard'.
